Street Life


This is my piece which I have given an African theme. The graffitti means "come" in Zulu and I have used Shwe Shwe fabric for the dress the flower seller is wearing. This is a very South African 100% cotton which is used extensively in the quilting medium and also is an extremely popular garment fabric. We have come a long way with this fabric and you can read all about the history of this if you google the name. We had a wonderful show of this at the Birmingham Festival.

Looking forward to seeing eveyone's interpretation - its always exciting to see what everyone has done.

    Brilliant - I love the details that you have put into this piece - the Shwe Shwe fabric, the Indebele style infill in the graffiti, the city
    in the background, the high security wall (where's the razor wire?). And I love the appearance of the vuvuzela entering stage left!!!

    This is a lovely piece, full of colour and life. I particularly love your flowers - are they painted or stitched? The contrast between the street seller and the city glimpsed over the wall works extremely well.

    great job patricia. i am fascinated by the fact that so many of our interpretations are linear (horizontal), in more than one of them are bricks, buildings and similar vegetation. interesting. i love all your fabrics and the way you have used them.

    In answer to the questions from Phil and Linda. I painted the flowers using fabric paint, and the brick wall was a printed piece of fabric which seemed to fit the piece well.

    I like the way you've drawn it all out - lots of expression in the movement of the lady. In fact on closer look, I get the feeling that the vuvuzela has just blasted out and startled her. Well done if that was your intent! And the flowers make it a cheerful piece. I like it.

    We certainly still remember the excitement that rang out around the world during FIFA and how proud the country was to host it. I love your piece and it does convey the contentment, happiness and pride I remember seeing on the faces of people during that time.

    This is such a cultural opportunity for me to learn about language, fabrics and customs of South Africa! I love the contrast of the sophisticated city in the background to the simple life in a neighborhood "just over" the brick wall. Your skill of telling a story in a small space is genious!
