ENCORE !

I have always wanted to play around with my Zebra pics. Although this is a new piece all together and not another version/interpretation from a previous challenge it is a repeat subject matter but new technique from my personal challenge (see blog).  The personal challenge was a painted freezer paper template.  This is my favourite technique ..... transfer photo image and thread painting.  The stripes on the left are painted freezer paper template. I thread painted the image first ,cut out the zebra and then fused and stitched it to the Bali background fabric.  One of my favourites of my challenges.

  1. What a great design decision. Their patterning just cries out for exploring and your composition is very striking. Interesting technique to thread paint first and then applique the zebra onto the background. How are you stabilizing the image while thread painting?

What a piece to end Phase 1 with!

    1. Bernina has a very nice iron on stabiliser which I double and then just place in a very tight frame. I have also found if you loosely zig zag over the picture first it helps secure the picture. I had to do the thread painting first as the photo transfer would not have been very visible on top of the Bali Fabric. It is not easy then appliqueing the 'picture' of many layers (thread, fabrics, double stabiliser) onto the background and securing with stitching. I had to use a topstitch needle ... any else snapped.

  2. Phil I absolutely love your subject and the thread painting - it looks amazing and so real. You must give me more details on the use of the freezer paper - as you can see I'm getting more daring these days! Well done and a real feather in you cap with this one.

  3. Such a modern approach to the composition, getting the animals' face in the right spot for a focal point, and I also like the contrast between the the bold stripes and the subtle background. Well done Patricia!

  4. Gorgeous! I'm so excited to check out the blog for your thread painting technique. Whenever I thread paint I think 'there must be a better way....I need to do some research'. Thanks for sharing.

  10. Your thread painting adds dimension and texture. It is stunning and the details "pop" right off the piece! I also love how you added a close-up of the Zebra hide to give it that artistic punch!

  12. Having watched the Life of Pi on the plane last night, I immediately responded so warmly to the zebra that you have so masterfully crafted. Kindness and calmness are two virtues and they shine through in your piece
