Abstract #1

My sand piece.

Inspired by the colours in the photo plus sea, sky, objects found and lost and, as suggested by a friend, a sail (though I think from the angle the boat is about to capsize!).
Abstract #1
I am quite pleased with this piece.  Abstract is not my forte and I even got to do some hand sewing.

The organza is rust and tea dyed.  The striped fabric was in a pack of small pieces of a lovely variety of coarsely woven fabrics - years old.  The slashes are cut from three layers of fabric which have been bonded together using Heat 'n Bond Ultra which gave me a lovely stiff piece to work with. Background is silk.  Ribbon and buttons from stash.

  1. Hilary this is also very different to what you usually do and I really like your design. Your diagonal lines offset the square, rectangle and straight lines. Looks like it was a fun piece to do and it also opens up new design avenues you can experiment with. It is a very restful piece and I do like the fabric choices.

  2. Isn't it interesting, Hilary, how your choice of this neutral colour has inspired so much experimentation with texture? The textures of the organza and the striped swatch are my favourite elements in this piece, and the blue sets them off nicely.

  3. Yes, I agree this is different from what you normally do but why did I know it was yours before I checked the name? I like the sweep of red creating movement and your ever so perfect satin edging.

  4. Perfect! Love what you have done. I did take a quiet bet that I would see some 'eco leaf transfer fabric' in your piece but I lost on that one.

  5. Nice composition and I too like the blue as a counterpoint. The organza is lovely with it's detail.
Interesting to see how much hand stitching has been done with this challenge.

  6. Lovely tea dyed fabric that I am sure will inspire a series of these combined element pieces. Very fresh!

  7. My eyes keep being pulled to the red fabric, then down to the buttons, then back again. Love how you have made a neutral colour piece sing.

  8. The colours so remind me of a walk along the edge of the sea. The textures of the tea dyed organza and the chenille work really well together.

  10. I like its calmness and simplicity. I think that the curved red line is the one that really makes the piece interesting.
